A Limerick is a short poem that is usually funny. They have to be written following some simple rules. The 1st and 2nd line has to rhyme with each other, the 3rd and 4th line have to rhyme with each other but not the 1st and 2nd line. Finally the 5th line has to rhyme with the 1st line. I know this sounds confusing but it is actually quite simple. It will make sense once you read my limericks below and as you practice writing your own the better you will get and the easier it will become.
The Limericks below are the first limericks I ever wrote. The first 2 I wrote many years ago when I was in primary school as part of my poetry project in class. The third one I wrote much more recently a little while before writing this article.
Limerick 1
There was a dog named Paul
He had a rubber ball
He bounced it so hard
It left the yard
It ended up at the mall
Limerick 2
There was a young man named Brian
He owned a pet lion
The lion was old
He always got cold
So we borrowed a blanket from Ryan
Limerick 3
There was young gunslinger
He was also quite a sinner
When he fired his gun
People started to run
So the gunslinger went home for dinner
Conclusion
As you can see Limericks are fun, short and simple to write. All you need is some practice and you will be writing your own great limericks in no time. Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoyed this poem. Let me know your thoughts and questions in the comments.
